The main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has called on Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody to resign, citing the Lakvijaya coal procurement scandal and the deepening national fuel crisis.
Former Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella led the demand at a Colombo press conference, invoking Westminster parliamentary traditions. “Action was taken against those responsible for purchasing substandard medicines, and the same principle must be applied in the case of substandard coal,” Kiriella said.
No-Confidence Motion Looms
The resignation demand comes ahead of the no-confidence motion debate scheduled for April 10, which would be the first such motion faced by the NPP government. The motion centres on allegations of substandard coal procurement at the Lakvijaya power plant and the minister’s handling of the energy crisis.
Kiriella also broadened the SJB’s attack beyond the energy portfolio, criticising the government for failing to deliver on economic promises including removing VAT from essentials and reducing electricity tariffs by a third. He claimed public dissatisfaction with the government is widespread.
Political Context
The SJB characterised itself as a leader in anti-corruption efforts, with Kiriella citing his prior role in ensuring passage of the Anti-Corruption Bill during his tenure as Chief Opposition Whip.
The government has not issued a direct response to the resignation demand. Energy Minister Jayakody continues to face scrutiny over the Lakvijaya coal tender awarded to Taranjot Resources Ltd, with consumer groups demanding prosecution and opposition MPs alleging suppression of a coal quality report.
