Asia Rugby has handed Sri Lanka a 20-0 walkover defeat in their final Asia Rugby Emirates Men’s Championship 2026 fixture after the national team could not secure travel visas to South Korea in time, the governing body announced on Friday.

The match was scheduled for Saturday, June 13, at the Namdong Asiad Rugby Stadium in Incheon. Under the competition’s regulations, South Korea will be awarded four competition points and the fixture recorded as a 20-0 win for the hosts. Asia Rugby said Sri Lanka Rugby, the Korea Rugby Union and the regional governing body had explored several options to facilitate the match but the visa process could not be completed within the required timeframe.

After reviewing the international rugby calendar, travel requirements, venue availability and team commitments, Asia Rugby concluded there is no suitable window to reschedule the match inside the 2026 competition cycle.

The cancellation closes Sri Lanka’s tournament without a final on-field outing. Earlier in the championship, Hong Kong China edged Sri Lanka 15-14 in Colombo before beating South Korea 45-9 in Hong Kong — results that secured Hong Kong China a seventh consecutive Asia Rugby Emirates Men’s Championship title.

Asia Rugby said the official standings will be updated to reflect the awarded result. The administrative failure adds another governance question for Sri Lanka Rugby, the union currently navigating the Olympic tier-3 funding allowance dispute.

Update — Sri Lanka Rugby explanation

In a statement issued on Friday, Sri Lanka Rugby apologised for the cancellation and said an internal review traced the visa failure to operational and administrative issues during the final stages of squad preparation. The union said separating the Men’s Sevens and Men’s Fifteens programmes resulted in additional player selections and a revised squad list, which led to delays in approvals and visa processing. Sri Lanka Rugby said it had worked with Asia Rugby, the Korea Rugby Union, the Ministry of Sports and relevant authorities to explore alternative travel arrangements and dates, but could not complete the required documentation in time.
