The official programme for the 2026 State Vesak Festival has been issued by the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, with the Cabinet of Ministers declaring Vesak Week from May 27 to June 2.

The ministry said arrangements have been made to celebrate the festival β€œin a grand manner across the country” under the guidance of the All Ceylon Shasanarakshaka Mandalaya. The programme is being coordinated with the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, the Department of Buddhist Affairs, district and divisional secretariats, and other government and non-government institutions.

Vesak Poya, which commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha, falls on May 27, 2026 β€” marking the start of the declared Vesak Week.

The state-level programme is separate from the Mercantile Holiday schedule confirmed earlier this month, which applies to private-sector observance. The Vesak rollout also comes as political parties plan around the Poya β€” the UNP has scrapped its May Day rally citing the overlap, reflecting the expected scale of religious observance during the week.

A detailed schedule of events and the designated state Vesak city are expected to be published as preparations progress.
