Veteran Sri Lankan writer Tennyson Perera has died at the age of 86, NewsFirst reported on Friday. He passed away on the morning of April 24 following a prolonged illness.
Born on February 2, 1940 in Kotikawatta, Perera authored more than 100 books across short stories, novels and translations during a career spanning more than five decades. Critics regard him as a pioneering figure who introduced a distinct literary style to Sri Lanka, and his writing often served as a vehicle for social reform, challenging injustice and inequality.
Perera received the State Literary Award for Best Short Story Collection for his book Asirimath Wedabima. Among his other notable works are Bhawantaranaya, Abhirahas Jeewitha Tharanaya, Arabi Nisollasaya, Maha Ravana and Sakwala Dadayama.
His 1967 work Dethirodeen Upan Budun was censored by the authorities and is widely regarded as the first book to have been banned in Sri Lanka.
The mortal remains of the late Tennyson Perera will lie in state at a private funeral parlour in Thalahena from 9 a.m. on April 26. Final rites will be performed at the Kotikawatta General Cemetery on April 27.
