The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution seeking to prevent President Donald Trump from taking further military action against Iran without congressional approval, Newswire reported. The measure was approved by a narrow 215-208 vote, with four Republicans joining Democrats in a rare bipartisan rebuke of the administration’s handling of the conflict.
Republican lawmakers Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett and Warren Davidson voted alongside Democrats in support of the measure. Democratic Congressman Jared Golden, who had opposed similar earlier efforts, also backed the resolution.
The resolution marks the fourth attempt by lawmakers to limit Trump’s war powers since the conflict with Iran began in February — and the first of those four to clear the House. Critics argue that continued military action lacks proper authorisation from Congress. The legislation must still be approved by the Republican-controlled Senate before it can proceed further. Even if approved by the Senate, Trump could veto the resolution, requiring a two-thirds majority in both chambers of Congress to override.
The vote comes despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. Trump said negotiations with Iran were progressing well and could be concluded as early as this weekend, although both sides have exchanged strikes in recent days despite a ceasefire agreement.
Earlier attempts at restraint have moved in fits and starts. The Senate advanced a war powers resolution 50–47 in late May in its own rare Republican rebuke and an earlier House version was pulled from a planned vote on May 22, while an April Senate resolution had been rejected 47-52. Wednesday’s House vote arrives a day after Trump told a podcast Iran had already agreed not to pursue a nuclear weapon.
