Uvindu Wijeweera, leader of the Uththara Vimukthi Peramuna (UVP), has criticised the opposition for lacking clear direction and long-term planning for the country.

Wijeweera, son of late JVP founder Rohana Wijeweera, made the comments on Avurudu day while visiting the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya to seek blessings for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

He said the opposition appears focused on gaining power without a proper strategy, adding that the public expects a political movement that prioritises the country’s interests over partisan ambition.

Wijeweera described what he called a major gap in the political system, suggesting that neither the ruling NPP bloc nor the main SJB-led opposition has offered a credible alternative vision for Sri Lanka’s future.

The UVP is a small left-wing party positioned outside both the NPP government and the SJB-UNP opposition alliance.
