A police sergeant was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a tipper truck in the Vavuniya area on Saturday.

The victim, a 46-year-old sergeant identified as Wijekulagoda, died at the scene of the crash on the Kandy–Jaffna A9 road, within the Vavuniya police division. The collision occurred near Irattaperiyakulam, along one of the country’s busiest highways.

Police said the sergeant’s motorcycle collided with the tipper truck, though accounts of the exact circumstances of the crash are being examined as part of the investigation. The A9 road, which links the north with the rest of the island, carries heavy vehicle traffic and has been the site of repeated fatal accidents.

The death adds to Sri Lanka’s continuing road safety toll, with motorcyclists among the most vulnerable road users. Authorities have repeatedly urged caution around heavy vehicles and stepped-up enforcement against speeding.

Investigations into the accident are continuing.
