Seven members of notorious organised crime gangs have been transferred from Boossa High-Security Prison to the newly established prison facility at Welisara Navy Camp, the Deputy Minister announced on Saturday.

The transfers mark one of the first reported prisoner movements to the Welisara facility, signalling that the new high-security prison is now operational. The government established the facility as part of its broader approach to managing high-risk inmates, particularly those linked to organised criminal networks.

Boossa Prison in Galle has long served as Sri Lanka’s primary facility for high-profile and dangerous inmates. The transfer to a Navy-administered facility at Welisara, north of Colombo, represents a shift in the security architecture for managing gang-related prisoners.

The move follows recent law enforcement activity targeting organised crime, including the Boossa prison assassination plot probe that uncovered audio recordings of a planned hit arranged from within prison walls.

The government has faced pressure to strengthen its handling of organised crime following several high-profile incidents, including cross-jurisdiction police raids and STF operations in Colombo.
