Sri Lanka marked World Blood Donor Day today under the global theme “One Drop of Humanity. Donate Blood. Save Lives.”
The National Blood Transfusion Service said 100 percent of Sri Lanka’s blood requirement is being met through voluntary donors. More than 467,000 units of blood were collected over the past year to meet the needs of nearly one million people across the country.
World Blood Donor Day is marked each June 14 to recognise voluntary, unpaid blood donors and to raise awareness of the global need for safe blood and blood products. Sri Lanka has maintained a fully voluntary, non-remunerated donor model — one of the World Health Organization’s benchmarks for a safe national blood supply.
