A fire broke out at a shop on Main Street in Pettah, Colombo, on Monday evening, and fire crews were still working to bring it under control as reports came in.
Two fire engines from the Colombo Municipal Council’s fire unit were deployed to the scene, according to Ada Derana and Aruna, both of which reported firefighters engaged in efforts to extinguish the blaze.
Hiru News, which reported the fire earlier in the evening and placed it at Gas Paha junction, said the fire started on the upper floor of a confectionery shop. It reported that the Fire Services Department had dispatched four fire engines.
Gas Paha junction sits at the eastern end of Main Street in Pettah, one of the most densely built commercial quarters in Colombo, where shops and upper-floor storage adjoin one another along narrow streets.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage had not been determined at the time of reporting. No casualties were reported in any of the initial accounts.
