A series of revenue-generating development projects worth Rs 2.5 billion begins across the island on Friday under the direction of the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government.
The projects fall under the national programme ‘Punarudaya Purawara’, and the ministry says the objective is to strengthen the local economy and social conditions, NewsFirst reported.
More than 100 projects covering several sectors are included in the programme.
First launches in Puttalam and Hambantota
The inaugural programmes are being held on Friday in Madurankuliya and Puttalam and in Angunakolapelessa, in the Hambantota district, under the patronage of the Minister and Deputy Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government. NewsFirst rendered the last of these as “Agunukolapelessa”.
The ministry has not published a breakdown of the individual projects, the sectors covered, or the timeline over which the Rs 2.5 billion will be spent.
Other town-level schemes
The programme joins other initiatives run through the same ministry, including the Pivithuru Purawara waste management programme and the earlier Mithuru Purawara clean-town initiative, which covered 25 towns at a cost of Rs 581 million.
Provincial Councils have been without elected members since their terms began expiring in 2017, leaving local government authorities and the ministry to administer such programmes directly.
