The Cabinet of Ministers has approved an estimated Rs. 581 million under the Clean Sri Lanka programme to implement development projects in 25 towns identified under the government’s “Mithuru Purawara” initiative, Newswire reported on Tuesday.
The programme was proposed under the 2026 Budget with the objective of improving small towns “for the convenience and well-being of local communities,” the Cabinet brief said. Under the framework, one priority development project has been identified for each selected town, with plans to complete all projects by 2026.
Twenty-five towns have been selected for development. Projects for 23 of them have already been identified during the initial phase, with the remaining two to be scoped before deployment.
Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake presented the proposal to secure the funding through the Clean Sri Lanka programme, which received Cabinet approval. The minister, who also handled the Rs.827m lubricating oil supply contracts cleared the same day, is the lead public-facing voice on urban infrastructure and cleanliness policy under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s administration.
The 25-town initiative slots beneath the Clean Sri Lanka programme, the umbrella framework whose 2026 Action Plan was reviewed by the President in April. It pairs with the parallel Praja Shakthi rural development drive across 1,000 villages, also launched on Tuesday, which targets all 14,000+ villages with at least one project each through Provincial Council channels.
