One person was killed and another injured when a car collided with the intercity train running from Colombo Fort to Kankesanthurai in the Araviyan Nagar area of Kilinochchi on Wednesday morning.
The Railway Department said the crash happened at around 11.30 a.m. at a level crossing fitted with warning signal lights that were functioning at the time.
The train sustained damage in the collision, and the department said steps had been taken to hold it at Kilinochchi railway station for the time being. NewsFirst did not report how long services on the northern line were disrupted or whether a replacement service was arranged.

The report did not identify the person killed or the injured passenger, give the number of people in the car, or say whether police have opened an investigation. It also did not state whether the crossing was gated or protected by lights alone — a distinction that matters, because Sri Lanka’s rail network includes a large number of crossings where signals operate without physical barriers.
The department’s confirmation that the warning lights were working shifts attention to how the vehicle came to be on the crossing. No account from the train driver or from witnesses has been reported.
A recurring hazard
Level crossings remain one of the most persistent sources of fatalities on Sri Lanka’s railways. The northern line through Kilinochchi carries the Colombo Fort-Kankesanthurai intercity service, restored after the line’s post-war reconstruction, and runs through flat country with numerous road crossings.
A collision between a train and a three-wheeler at Kapuwatta, Kandana in June followed a similar pattern.
Railway management is separately under pressure from trade unions, which this week demanded an investigation into repeated locomotive engine breakdowns. That dispute concerns rolling stock reliability rather than crossing safety.
