Madampe Police have arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of repeatedly sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl, Ada Derana reported on Tuesday.
The suspect, a resident of the Hiruwalpola area in Bingiriya, was taken into custody after the girl’s mother lodged a complaint with police.
The mother had been working overseas and returned to Sri Lanka on 1 August. The girl had been living with relatives during her absence, and investigators found that the suspect had also been staying at the same house. The girl told her mother after her return that she had been assaulted on repeated occasions when no one else was at home, according to Ada Derana’s account.
Police opened an investigation on receiving the complaint.
Court and medical steps
The girl has been referred to the Judicial Medical Officer at Chilaw General Hospital for examination. The suspect is to be produced before the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court, and Madampe Police are continuing inquiries.
Ada Derana did not report what charges he faces, when he is due in court, or whether he is related to the girl. The allegations are untested and no plea has been reported.
LankaNewz does not publish details that could identify a child in a case of this kind, and some particulars carried by Ada Derana are omitted here for that reason.
A separate case from June
This is not the Madampe case reported in June, in which a businessman was arrested over the alleged abuse of a child. The suspects, their ages and the circumstances differ, and no outlet has linked the two.
Single-source
Ada Derana is the only verified newsroom to have reported the arrest at the time of writing. Hiru News, NewsFirst, the Daily Mirror and Colombo Gazette carried nothing on it. Cases at this stage are frequently reported by a single outlet and picked up by others once the suspect appears in court.
