A 65-year-old businessman has been arrested by Madampe Police for the alleged sexual abuse of a five-year-old preschool student, Ada Derana reported.
The suspect, a resident of the Karukuwatawa area in Madampe, was taken into custody following a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s mother. The incident is alleged to have occurred when the young girl entered a retail shop operated by the suspect to purchase biscuits, after which she was lured into the interior of the premises, police said.
The victim has been admitted to the Chilaw General Hospital and referred to the Judicial Medical Officer for a comprehensive medical examination. Madampe Police are conducting further investigations, and the suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court.
The case is the latest in a string of child sexual-abuse arrests this cycle that have spanned both religious and lay perpetrators, including a Bahirawakanda monk in Kandy and a Moulavi at Eragama, Ampara earlier in June, alongside the 24-year High Court sentence handed down in Anuradhapura for a temple-robe-clad perpetrator.
