SriLankan Airlines marked its 47th anniversary on Tuesday, 1 September.
The national carrier began operations in 1979 under the name AirLanka, flying with a fleet of two Boeing 707 aircraft, Hiru News reported. It has since grown into a regional operator and adopted its present name, and the airline said it has maintained consistent standards of safety and reliability across that period.

Context
The carrier’s recent activity has been concentrated on rebuilding its route network. In August it resumed Colombo–Kuwait flights with six services a week, restoring a Gulf route that serves both migrant workers and transit traffic.
It is operating in an increasingly contested market. Bandaranaike International Airport handled nearly 4.75 million passenger movements in the first half of 2026, and foreign carriers have continued to add Colombo services — among them Vietjet’s Colombo–Ho Chi Minh City route launched in August.
