Vietjet Air will launch its first direct flights between Sri Lanka and Vietnam in August 2026, operating four round-trips per week between Colombo and Ho Chi Minh City. The carrier announced the schedule at the Sri Lanka–Vietnam Trade, Investment and Tourism Cooperation Forum in Colombo, in the presence of Vietnamese President Tô Lâm and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.
Vietjet First Vice Chairman Dinh Viet Phuong said the new route would “open a new air connection between the two countries” and promote cooperation in trade, investment, tourism and cultural exchange. The airline said the service is expected to strengthen tourism, trade, investment and people-to-people links between the two countries.
Travellers from Colombo will gain direct access to Ho Chi Minh City and onward connectivity through Vietjet’s wider Asia-Pacific network, including destinations in Australia, Japan, South Korea and China. Vietjet currently operates 135 aircraft and has nearly 600 additional aircraft on order as part of its international expansion plans.
The announcement comes during Tô Lâm’s two-day state visit, which has elevated bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership and set a US$1 billion 2030 trade target. Vietnam Airlines also unveiled plans for a Colombo–Hanoi service at the same forum, completing a dual-airline launch on the new corridor.
Until now, travellers between Sri Lanka and Vietnam routed via Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Hong Kong. Direct services from August are expected to support tourism, business travel and Sri Lankan exports targeting Vietnam’s manufacturing economy and ASEAN markets.
