A foundation stone will be laid on Saturday (19) for a nursing quarters complex at Point Pedro Base Hospital, to be built at a cost of Rs. 212 million, the government news portal news.lk reported.
The afternoon ceremony will be held under the patronage of Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.
The project is intended to address what the government describes as a long-standing shortage of accommodation for the hospital’s nursing staff, a gap it says has caused them considerable difficulty over an extended period.
Construction will be funded by the Northern Provincial Council, under the government’s programme to develop physical resources in the health sector.
The Governor of the Northern Province, local political representatives, the Provincial Chief Secretary and hospital staff are expected to attend.

The announcement comes a day after the same minister handed over a four-storey Medical Officers’ Quarters complex at Tellippalai Base Hospital in Jaffna, built for Rs. 196.6 million to house around 20 medical officers — part of a round of health appointments and handovers in the Northern Province that also saw 350 health attendants receive letters of appointment.
Taken together, the two buildings represent roughly Rs. 409 million of staff accommodation committed to Northern Province hospitals within a single week, one completed and one starting.
The comparison is worth making carefully. The Tellippalai figure comes with an occupancy number, so it works out at about Rs. 9.8 million per medical officer housed. No equivalent figure exists for Point Pedro, because the government has not said how many nursing officers the new complex will accommodate — so the two costs cannot yet be compared on a per-occupant basis.
Context
Staff accommodation has been a recurring constraint in the northern health system, where recruitment and retention depend partly on whether staff posted to a district can be housed there. The government has separately moved to expand the nursing workforce, gazetting 3,000 student nurse positions in June and recruiting 515 nursing graduates to Grade III posts in May.
Point Pedro Base Hospital serves the northern tip of the Jaffna peninsula and has been the subject of earlier upgrade work, including an Accident and Emergency unit.
