Parliament’s Committee on High Posts has approved the appointment of a new ambassador, a new high commissioner and the chairman of a state institution, meeting under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
The committee cleared Anzul Banu Jhan as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines, and Chandana Rohana Kumara Ambagolla as High Commissioner to Canada, according to Parliament’s own announcement and reporting by the Daily Mirror.
It also approved Nusith Kumarathunga as Chairman of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Limited, the state-owned insurer.
What the committee does
The Committee on High Posts is the parliamentary body that vets nominees to senior diplomatic postings and to the leadership of state institutions before those appointments take effect. Its approval is a required step for heads of mission and for the chairs of a range of public corporations.
Neither Parliament nor the Daily Mirror gave a date for the sitting at which the three approvals were granted, and no further detail on the nominees’ backgrounds was released.
