The foundation stone for 51 housing units was laid at the Alagolla Estate in Badulla District on Tuesday, under the Indian government’s long-running plantation housing programme.
India’s Assistant High Commissioner in Kandy, Saranya V. S., laid the stone alongside Sri Lanka’s Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure K.V. Samantha Vidyaratna and Deputy Minister Pradeep Sundaralingam, Newswire reported.
Where it sits in the programme
The units are being built under Stage 2 of Phase IV of the Indian Housing Project, launched in October 2025 by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Phase IV targets 10,000 houses for the plantation community across six provinces.
The Indian Housing Project is India’s flagship development initiative in Sri Lanka, with grant assistance of more than INR 18 billion committed for roughly 60,000 houses since it began.
Other Indian assistance in the plantations
India’s work in Sri Lanka’s plantation regions extends beyond housing. Current and recent commitments include a multi-specialty hospital in Dickoya, smart classrooms, the upgrading of nine plantation schools, and support for the development of the Seetha Eliya Temple.
A separate multi-sectoral package of INR 750 million was announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2023, marking 200 years since the arrival of the Indian-origin Tamil community in Sri Lanka.
At the ceremony
Senior officials from the Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure attended, along with representatives of the Plantation Human Development Trust and beneficiaries from the Alagolla Estate itself.
No completion date, per-unit cost or handover schedule for the 51 units was given in the report. Ada Derana also filed on the ceremony, but the site was unreachable at the time of writing, so its account could not be verified or used.
