Sri Lanka has been named both Asia’s Leading Cultural Destination 2026 and Asia’s Leading Nature Destination 2026 at the World Travel Awards — a double that no other country in the region took this year.
The titles were awarded at the 33rd World Travel Awards Asia, Oceania & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony, held at CROSSROADS Maldives on 27 September. NewsFirst reported the double win on Tuesday.
The World Travel Awards’ own results pages confirm both, listing Sri Lanka as the winner in each category and naming the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau as the winner profile.
Who the island beat
The two shortlists were separate and the competition was not token.
For Asia’s Leading Cultural Destination, Sri Lanka was nominated against Cambodia, India, Japan, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam — a field containing three of Asia’s largest heritage-tourism economies.
For Asia’s Leading Nature Destination, the nominees were China, India, Nepal and Vietnam, including two countries that contain the Himalaya.
Why the pairing is unusual
The two categories reward different things. One measures ancient capitals, sacred sites, colonial-era heritage, festivals and living tradition; the other measures national parks, wildlife reserves, mountain ranges, forests and marine ecosystems.
Most destinations are known for one or the other. NewsFirst framed the significance in terms of compactness — the ability to visit the ruins of an ancient kingdom in the morning, see wild elephants in the afternoon and reach the coast by evening, in a country of roughly 65,000 square kilometres.
The awards are decided by a combination of industry and public voting and are among the travel sector’s most widely cited accolades, though they are a promotional industry programme rather than an independent audit of visitor experience.
Context
The wins land in a year of steady international recognition for Sri Lankan tourism, alongside the island’s placing in the world’s top 50 food destinations and its improved showing in the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Development Index.
Several Sri Lankan properties and operators also took titles at the same ceremony. Neither the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau nor the Tourism Ministry had issued a statement on the two national awards at the time of writing, and no verified Sri Lankan newsroom other than NewsFirst had filed on them — the confirmation above comes from the awarding body’s own published results.
