Arugam Bay has been ranked the best beach in Asia in the Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards 2026, with a score of 98.84 — and three more Sri Lankan beaches placed in the regional top 20.
Bentota took ninth with 88.33, Tangalle 14th with 83.33 and Negombo 19th with 78.92, the Daily Mirror reported at 2.41 p.m. on Thursday. Thailand’s Railay Beach was second on 94.44 and Coral Beach on Malaysia’s Pangkor Island third on 93.33.
NewsFirst filed its own account fifteen minutes later with the same six figures. It adds the field Arugam Bay finished ahead of — destinations in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, India and the Philippines — and names Boracay, Nusa Dua and Malaysia’s Perhentian Islands among the others ranked. Four entries in a top 20, it notes, is one of the strongest showings by any single country in the list.
This is the same awards cycle Sri Lanka already placed in
Neither filing mentions it, but this desk reported on the same programme six days ago. The Galle Face Hotel took sixth place in the Rest of Asia category of the Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards 2026, alongside a Gold at the South Asian Travel Awards in Malé. The results are landing category by category rather than all at once.
That earlier report also establishes what these scores are, which matters for reading them. The awards are a readers’ poll decided by votes cast by travellers, not a judged industry prize. The figures are reader ratings, not measurements of anything — a distinction neither Thursday filing draws.
The ranking arrives in a flat month for arrivals
Arugam Bay sits on the east coast in Ampara District and is Sri Lanka’s best-known surfing destination. In August the government allocated Rs. 173 million to develop an “Arugam Bay Sunset View” site, part of a shift that will route tourism development funds directly to districts from 2027.
The top ranking lands in a month that was not a strong one for the industry overall. September arrivals came in at 158,557 — 414 visitors short of September 2025, a 0.26% year-on-year decline that denied the island both a record month and its first monthly growth since May.
Not reported
Neither outlet says how many readers voted, how many beaches were considered, or what the scores measure, and Condé Nast’s methodology is not described. Neither gives Arugam Bay’s placing in any previous edition, so the first place cannot be read as a rise or a fall. The full top-20 ordering is not published in either account — NewsFirst names three further destinations without placing them, and only the Daily Mirror carries Coral Beach’s score.
No comment from Sri Lanka Tourism, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority or the Tourism Ministry appears in either report. Ada Derana also filed on the rankings, under the headline “Arugam Bay named Asia’s most attractive beach in 2026 survey”, but the site has been unreachable from this desk for twenty-seven consecutive days and the report could not be read; it is noted here rather than cited.
