Globamed (Pvt) Ltd, a newly established healthcare travel company headquartered in Colombo, has launched with the stated aim of positioning Sri Lanka as a leading medical tourism destination in the Asia-Pacific region.

The company says it will connect international patients with Sri Lankan hospitals, specialist doctors and healthcare providers, handling the full journey rather than referrals alone, Colombo Gazette reported.

Markets and services

Globamed will initially target South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Sri Lankan expatriate communities.

Its listed services run from hospital and specialist coordination to cosmetic and aesthetic procedures, dental care, fertility and subfertility treatment, general and orthopaedic surgery, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, and Ayurveda wellness programmes. Around those it offers medical visa assistance, airport transfers, accommodation, transport, translation support, and post-treatment follow-up and teleconsultation.

The company argues Sri Lanka’s case rests on qualified medical staff, modern facilities, competitive treatment costs, relatively short waiting times and an established tourism and wellness sector.

The target

Founder and managing director Nipuna Liyanaarachchi said the ambition went beyond launching another operator.

“We want to build a trusted healthcare gateway that connects patients from around the world with Sri Lanka’s healthcare capabilities. In the long term, our vision is to develop Sri Lanka into a world-class medical tourism hub within the Asia-Pacific region.”

The company’s stated objective is to serve more than 300 international patients a year by its third year — a modest figure against the language of regional leadership, and the only quantified commitment in the announcement.
