The Ministry of Defence has activated an islandwide security programme for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year period, deploying the Tri-Forces, Sri Lanka Police, and intelligence agencies across the country.

The joint operation, authorised by Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), covers festivals, musical shows, and religious programmes scheduled around the April 13-14 Avurudu celebrations. A Special Operations Room has been established at Police Headquarters to coordinate the effort.

The public can report suspicious activity or seek assistance through dedicated hotlines: 011-2013051, 011-2027148, 011-2027149, and 011-2430912, or via email at [email protected].

The heightened security posture comes amid an already active state of emergency and follows the Easter Sunday seventh anniversary commemorations earlier this month. Authorities have also issued safety guidelines for Avurudu games and an excise ban on liquor sales for April 13-14.
