One weather-related death has been reported in Batticaloa as severe rainfall continues to lash Sri Lanka. The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said the death occurred in the Koralepatthu South division.
According to the DMC’s 10am situation report, 203 people from 62 families across the Ratnapura, Galle, Monaragala and Batticaloa districts have been severely affected by adverse weather. Seventeen individuals from seven families in the Ratnapura District have been moved to a temporary safety shelter.
The DMC said 39 houses have sustained partial damage and one small or medium enterprise has also been damaged.
The Batticaloa death is the first weather-related fatality reported this monsoon cycle. The DMC continues to monitor conditions as the Department of Meteorology has issued a Red Warning for heavy rains with 33 major and medium reservoirs already spilling. Landslide warnings cover 11 districts under the National Building Research Organisation’s yellow and amber alerts.
