Authorities have warned that legal action will be taken against buses operating without valid permits during the Sinhala-Tamil New Year festive season, Ada Derana reported on April 12.
The warning comes as millions of Sri Lankans travel across the country for Avurudu celebrations, creating heavy demand for public transport services. The festive rush has historically attracted unlicensed operators seeking to profit from the surge in passenger numbers.
The enforcement drive targets private bus operators running unauthorised services, particularly on popular inter-city routes between Colombo and major towns. Authorities have stepped up roadside inspections to verify permits and route licences during the peak travel window.
The move follows the recent NTC bus permit transfer reform and comes amid a broader push to regularise public transport operations. Transport authorities have also arranged special bus services through the state-run SLTB to meet festive demand.
Passengers are advised to use authorised services and report unlicensed operators to relevant authorities. The enforcement is expected to continue through the Avurudu holiday period until April 21.
