The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has announced that its special raid and investigation programme will continue until April 30, extending enforcement well beyond the Sinhala-Tamil New Year festive period.

CAA Director of Information and Consumer Affairs Asela Bandara said nearly 2,000 raids have been carried out since March 20 targeting traders who fail to display prices, sell goods at inflated rates, or engage in unfair consumer practices.

“CAA officials are actively taking necessary measures to prevent consumer exploitation,” Bandara said, urging consumers to report violations through the CAA hotline at 1977 during office hours.

The extension builds on an already aggressive enforcement campaign. The CAA previously deployed 350 officers for festive season surveillance, completing over 6,000 inspections since January. Recent operations have targeted overpriced rice in Dambulla and Kegalle, an unlicensed ayurvedic cream factory in Matale, and unregistered cosmetics worth Rs. 10 million in Pettah.

The continued crackdown comes as the cost of traditional Avurudu celebrations rose 7 percent this year amid the ongoing energy crisis.
