The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on Saturday took up the magistrate’s inquiry into the suspicious death of former SriLankan Airlines chief executive Kapila Chandrasena for the fourth time, with the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) telling the bench that two wallets belonging to the deceased had been recovered from his Barnes Place residence.

Officers told Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara the wallets were found by a domestic worker while cleaning the house, in the corridor in front of the deceased’s room.

The magistrate then drew attention to a contradiction in earlier evidence. A previous ‘B’ report had stated, based on CCTV footage, that no external party had entered the residence. But a witness in an earlier hearing had testified that the deceased was seen speaking with a person from outside in the living area. The magistrate ordered investigators to clarify the discrepancy.

Investigators told court that while no external party had entered through the parking area, several individuals had come in through the front door. Investigations into that strand of inquiry are continuing.

The bench also asked about progress on Chandrasena’s mobile phone. Officers said they had sought guidance from the Criminal Investigation Department on further steps with the devices, an issue that has run since the CCTV DVR was sent for forensic analysis.

Statements were recorded from four witnesses on Saturday, including two who had signed bail bonds for Chandrasena before his death at his Colpetty residence on May 8. Further witness examination is scheduled for May 26.
