A visiting Chinese delegation led by Xin Chunying, member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and Chairperson of the NPC Constitution and Law Committee, has met officials of Sri Lanka’s Parliament and pledged deeper bilateral cooperation, EconomyNext reported on Wednesday.
The delegation called on Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne, who, according to a Parliament statement, “emphasized the importance of strengthening parliamentary diplomacy between the two legislatures.” Xin reaffirmed China’s continued commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation for mutual benefit.
Accompanying her were Cong Bin, member of the NPC Standing Committee and Vice-Chairperson of the Constitution and Law Committee, Gao Zicheng, member of the same committee, and other officials.
The group also met Highways Minister Bimal Ratnayake, Chair of the Sri Lanka-China Parliamentary Friendship Association. Their discussions “focused on enhancing parliamentary exchanges, cooperation in policymaking, and strengthening institutional ties through the Sri Lanka-China Parliamentary Friendship Association,” Parliament said.
The delegation then met Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara and joined sittings of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Justice and National Integration and the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Governance, Justice and Civil Protection. Both sides exchanged views on legal and judicial practice, governance and institutional cooperation, according to the Parliament readout.
The visit follows a series of high-profile Chinese diplomatic engagements in Colombo this month, including Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong’s recent address arguing the Indian Ocean must not become a stage for major-power rivalry. The legislative track adds a parliament-to-parliament channel to the executive-level exchanges and contrasts with Beijing’s more pointed pushback on the US Hormuz blockade overseas.
