A fuel tanker carrying 36,700 metric tonnes of Octane 92 petrol arrived in Sri Lanka on Wednesday, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation confirmed.
The shipment was ordered from India and unloading is set to begin immediately for distribution across the island. It is the latest in a series of secured imports as Sri Lanka manages fuel supply under emergency conditions triggered by the Middle East crisis.
CPC Chairman had previously assured 12 fuel shipments through June to prevent shortages. The corporation suspended QR-based petrol rationing on April 11 ahead of the Avurudu travel rush, and post-holiday replenishment is critical as traffic and economic activity return to normal this week.
Sri Lanka has relied on Indian and Singaporean fuel supplies after the Hormuz blockade disrupted traditional Middle Eastern supply routes. The government has also been in talks with Russia and China to diversify its procurement sources.
Wednesday’s arrival helps ease immediate supply pressure, though the country’s limited storage capacity of 150,000 metric tonnes remains a structural bottleneck.
