The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation has warned that fuel stations distributing fuel without the mandatory QR code system face legal action, with the CPC Managing Director vowing to strictly enforce the regulation.
Dr. Mayura Neththikumarage, CPC’s Managing Director, said the QR-based system is compulsory for all fuel distribution and that circumventing it constitutes a violation of the law. The announcement follows complaints received from fuel stations in the Uva Province that have been bypassing the system to issue fuel without QR verification.
The QR fuel quota mechanism, which was resumed in April following a temporary concession period, requires consumers to present a valid QR code to access their fuel allocation. The system is designed to prevent over-purchasing and ensure equitable distribution across the island.
CPC said it will work with authorities to identify non-compliant stations and pursue legal remedies against operators found in breach of the regulation.
The enforcement drive comes as the government has announced a three-month fuel subsidy totalling Rs. 57 billion for diesel and petrol consumers, with the CBSL Governor attributing CPC’s $1 billion petroleum import bill in just four months as a key driver of rupee depreciation.
