The Ministry of Education has announced a programme to develop playgrounds in 25 selected schools across all of Sri Lanka’s districts.

Ministry spokesperson Madhura Seneviratne said the playgrounds will be built to standardised specifications with adequate infrastructure and maintenance facilities. One school per district has been selected for the initial phase.

The project forms part of broader efforts to improve physical education facilities in government schools island-wide. The ministry has faced mounting pressure over the state of school infrastructure, with a recent directive also urging schools to reduce spending on Avurudu celebrations and redirect funds toward educational priorities.

A separate programme addressing corporal punishment in schools, which recorded 11,400 complaints this year, is also underway. The playground initiative signals the ministry’s push to improve both the physical and disciplinary environment in public schools.
