Around 50 estate houses in low-lying sections of the Fordyce Estate in Dickoya were submerged on Tuesday afternoon following heavy rainfall in the Hatton–Dickoya area, according to Hatton Police.
Authorities said the flooding was triggered by the overflow of the Dickoya stream, which runs through the estate before feeding into the Castlereagh Reservoir. Both residential buildings within the estate and sections of the main road were inundated.
Vehicular traffic along the Hatton Fordyce–Dayagama road has been completely disrupted, police said, cutting off one of the main access routes in the hill country estate belt.
The incident comes amid a pattern of heavy monsoonal rainfall and lightning activity across several districts. No casualties have been reported at the time of writing, and authorities have not yet announced formal evacuation or relief arrangements for affected estate families.
The Castlereagh Reservoir, which the Dickoya stream feeds, is part of the Laxapana hydropower cascade — a system whose water levels are closely watched amid continuing discussion of hydropower availability and drawdown decisions this year.
