The Department of Irrigation has issued a minor flood warning for low-lying areas along the Attanagalu Oya and Uruwal Oya river basins following heavy rainfall over the past several hours, the department said on Thursday evening.
The warning was issued after the department analysed significant rainfall recorded within the Attanagalu Oya catchment area together with rising water levels observed at its hydrological gauging stations.
Six Divisional Secretariat divisions in the Gampaha District are at risk: Divulapitiya, Mirigama, Attanagalla, Mahara, Gampaha and Minuwangoda. The department said several roads passing through these areas are also at risk of inundation.
Residents in the affected areas and motorists using roads in flood-prone stretches have been urged to remain vigilant.
The warning is the latest in a cluster of weather advisories from state agencies on Thursday. The Disaster Management Centre has issued a Red Alert covering 37 reservoirs that are now overflowing or spilling, and the National Building Research Organisation has extended Level 2 landslide warnings to Galle and Kalutara districts in addition to the broader low-pressure system advisory covering 12 districts. Earlier in the week, the Irrigation Department had also flagged 33 reservoirs spilling water as the wet weather intensified.
