The Colombo High Court has fixed July 7 as the date to commence the trial against SLPP parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa over the controversial Krrish financial transaction, NewsFirst reported on Friday.
The Attorney General’s indictment, filed before the Colombo High Court on February 5, 2025, alleges Rajapaksa committed criminal breach of trust by obtaining Rs. 70 million from the India-based Krrish company on the pretext of promoting rugby in Sri Lanka and subsequently misusing the funds.
The case was first taken up before High Court Judge Nadee Aparna Suwandurugoda on April 23, when the bench ordered the matter recalled today for trial-fixing. A previous lawyers’ boycott in February had stalled proceedings.
Rajapaksa was named a suspect in the original investigation, arrested, produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court and later released on bail before the case was transferred to the High Court for trial. The Krrish payment is alleged to have been made during the presidency of his father Mahinda Rajapaksa, when a Krrish-backed mixed-use development in Colombo was under government consideration.
The trial-fixing comes as the Rajapaksa family faces a widening accountability docket. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has appeared before CIABOC in the Airbus probe and is the subject of an assets affidavit dispute. Brother Basil Rajapaksa was ordered arrested earlier on May 29 over alleged misuse of Rs. 7.8 million from the SLTPB. Namal himself has separately contested the politicisation of the Easter attacks probe.
