A firearm designed in the shape of a pen — believed to be commonly used in targeted assassinations — has been discovered during an operation carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department, NewsFirst reported on Monday.
The weapon was recovered based on information obtained during the questioning of a suspect alleged to have operated multiple organised crimes in the Southern Province. The suspect had been brought back to Sri Lanka after staying overseas. Police said the firearm was found carefully concealed in the possession of an individual in the Weligama area.
Authorities further noted that in recent times, several organised crime figures who had been abroad were brought back to the country. Based on information uncovered through their interrogations, police have managed to seize a number of illegal items, including drugs and firearms.
The pen-shaped weapon is a new typology in the current cycle of police seizures, which has so far been dominated by conventional handguns recovered from CCD detentions and T-56-grade weaponry found alongside protected-species trophies. The Southern Province organised-crime probe also follows the Dubai repatriation track that delivered “Batuwatte Chamara” to CID interrogators earlier this month and has produced a string of subsequent arrests.
