Public Health Inspectors have filed legal action against 817 food outlets as part of an islandwide food safety operation during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festive season, according to the Public Health Inspectors’ Union of Sri Lanka.
The programme, which began on April 1, has seen 967 raids conducted across the country. A total of 11,064 food establishments have been inspected, with 3,045 food items taken into custody and 2,299 items destroyed for being unfit for consumption.
Union president K.A.P. Boralessa said 2,300 Public Health Inspectors are involved in the ongoing operation, which runs through the Avurudu festival period.
The PHI enforcement drive runs parallel to the Consumer Affairs Authority’s own market raids targeting price gouging and substandard goods during the festive season. The CAA has separately conducted raids in Dambulla, Kegalle, and Pettah in recent weeks.
