The Prime Minister’s Media Division has warned the public against fake news circulating on social media that misuses the name, photographs and video footage of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.
In a statement, the Division said edited videos falsely portraying the Prime Minister expressing certain views, along with fabricated social media posts featuring her photographs, had been circulated online. Some of the content was also created using the unauthorised logos of various media institutions and news websites to lend it false credibility.
The misleading material reportedly includes false claims related to business and employment opportunities, as well as the country’s economy and tax policies — framing designed to appear like legitimate government or news announcements.
The Media Division said the fake stories had been generated using artificial intelligence and other modern technological tools, urging the public not to be misled and to remain vigilant.
The warning is the latest in a series of official alerts over AI-driven disinformation in Sri Lanka. The Civil Aviation Authority recently flagged fake social media accounts impersonating its officials, while a BBC Panorama investigation traced AI-operated Facebook pages spreading political disinformation to Sri Lanka. Former cricketer Kumar Sangakkara has likewise warned of deepfake investment scams using his likeness.
