A train has derailed in the Rambukkana area on Saturday morning, but the Department of Sri Lanka Railways said the incident is not expected to cause delays or disruption to scheduled services, Ada Derana reported.
Superintendent of Train Operations Asanka Samarasinghe said the train, which was operating on the Rambukkana to Panadura route, derailed while in service. Railway authorities have begun re-railing operations on the affected train, he added. The exact cause of the derailment and the number of carriages involved were not immediately disclosed.
Saturday’s incident is the latest in a sustained run of derailments on the country’s railway network this cycle. Sri Lanka has seen multiple high-profile derailments since April, including the Sagarika express derailment at Wadduwa on the coastal line on April 24 and a second Sagarika derailment near Kompannavidiya the following day, the Dematagoda derailment on May 4, the Wanawasala main-line derailment on May 16, and the Maradana express engine derailment on May 24. Railway officials have so far attributed the cluster to a mix of track-condition factors and rolling-stock issues rather than a single underlying cause.
Asanka Samarasinghe is the named Superintendent of Train Operations across most of the recent derailment reports and is now the recurring railway-side voice on operational disruption.
