Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga won the men’s javelin at the Doha Diamond League on Thursday with a throw of 88.68 metres, the latest in a string of headline results that has lifted him into the front rank of the world javelin field.
Tharanga — competing under his given name Rumesh Pathirage on some entry lists — held off two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada (86.38m) in second and American Curtis Thompson (85.99m) in third. India’s reigning Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra, competing for the first time this year after multiple injuries, finished fourth with a best of 85.69m. Trinidad and Tobago’s reigning world title-holder Keshorn Walcott was also in the field.
“I’m glad I had a win today… it was one of my dreams to compete here as the first ever Sri Lankan in the Diamond League circuit,” the 23-year-old told reporters after the meet.
The result extends a remarkable 2026 run for the Sri Lankan. In the space of seven weeks Tharanga has now taken silver at the Rabat Diamond League with 85.97m, produced a national record 92.62m to finish second in Rome, won the Ostrava Golden Spike meet with 86.57m, and now added a Diamond League victory in Qatar. He climbed to No. 2 in the World Athletics men’s javelin rankings on 1,333 points earlier this week, trailing only Germany’s Julian Weber.
Beating Chopra — who has dominated the global javelin circuit for the better part of a decade — gives Tharanga arguably his most significant individual scalp to date. The Doha win caps a Middle East–Europe swing that has reshaped Sri Lanka’s profile in track and field and will sharpen expectations heading into the World Athletics Championships later in the season.
