Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga has secured the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw at the Rabat Diamond League meeting in Morocco, NewsFirst reported.
Tharanga delivered a strong performance, recording a best throw of 85.97 metres to clinch second place in the competition. The achievement marks another notable international success for Sri Lanka in athletics on the Diamond League stage.
The Rabat result drove a further rise in the World Athletics standings. By June 4, Tharanga had climbed two places to fifth in the men’s javelin world rankings with an Average Performance Score of 1,287 points, Newswire reported. Germany’s Julian Weber leads the table; Tharanga is the first Sri Lankan to break into the discipline’s global top five.
The Rabat podium follows a productive run for the 24-year-old, who won gold at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi in March and had climbed to world No. 7 at the start of May. He shares Sri Lanka’s javelin scene this season with Sumedha Lekamge, whose 86.18-metre seasonal best at Diyagama in mid-May underscored the depth Sri Lanka now has in the discipline.
The Rabat Diamond League meet — held under the World Athletics Diamond League circuit — is one of the early-season showcases for top-tier throwers and middle-distance runners ahead of the European summer season.
