Sri Lanka’s leading javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has risen to seventh in the men’s world rankings, the highest position any Sri Lankan javelin athlete has held this season.
The new ranking follows a string of strong performances last month, headlined by a 89.28-metre throw that won gold at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi and set a new meet record. In Nairobi, Tharanga finished ahead of an international field that included Olympic champion Thomas Röhler and Olympic silver medallist and world champion Julius Yego.
The Nairobi mark was Tharanga’s second throw beyond 89 metres in 30 days, signalling that the level he reached in Kenya was not a one-off. World Athletics’ rolling rankings reward both peak distances and consistency, with Tharanga’s two 89-plus competitions weighing heavily in the formula.
The climb sets him up as a credible medal contender at this year’s remaining Diamond League legs and the upcoming global championships, where Sri Lanka has not had a podium-level javelin presence in recent memory.
