Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Levan Dzhagaryan held a meeting on Tuesday, May 13, with Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning A.J. Fernando and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Chairman D.J. Rajakaruna to discuss ongoing and future areas of bilateral cooperation, the Russian Embassy said in a social media post.
The participants reviewed current issues and explored prospects for strengthening cooperation between the two countries, with an exchange of views on key areas of mutual interest. All sides underscored the importance of maintaining regular contact and expressed confidence in the continued development of Russia–Sri Lanka cooperation, the embassy said.
The CPC Chairman’s presence in the bilateral meeting indicates that energy and fuel-supply discussions were on the agenda, even though the formal embassy readout described the talks in general terms. The meeting comes against the backdrop of an evolving regional fuel-import landscape: the US Treasury’s 30-day Russian oil sanctions waiver lapsed in April, and Sri Lanka has been weighing alternative supply arrangements while the Iran-related shipping risk premium keeps freight and crude costs elevated.
The Dzhagaryan meeting follows a series of recent Russia-Sri Lanka contacts including the Russian Health Minister Murashko’s May visit and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s earlier explanation of the NPP government’s calibrated approach to Russian energy options. CPC Chairman Rajakaruna has been the public-facing voice for fuel supply continuity in recent months.
