Former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya has resigned as Consultant to Sri Lanka Cricket’s High Performance Centre, effective end of May 2026.
In a letter to the newly appointed Cricket Transformation Committee, Jayasuriya said he was stepping aside after some committee members raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest — his simultaneous roles as HPC Consultant and President of the Matara District Cricket Association.
Jayasuriya said he had not taken the HPC position out of personal need, but because he was asked to serve during a difficult period for Sri Lankan cricket when few others were willing to step up following SL’s failure to qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy. He cited series wins over India, New Zealand, West Indies and Australia during his tenure as evidence of what was achieved.
Noting that he would rather continue developing cricket in Matara than remain in a role viewed as conflicted by the new administration, he said he did not want to become a distraction to the Transformation Committee’s reform process.
“My support for Sri Lanka Cricket will never depend on holding an official position,” Jayasuriya wrote.
The resignation comes on the same day a new selection committee headed by Kapila Wijegunawardena was appointed, replacing the panel headed by Pramodya Wickramasinghe. Jayasuriya had previously served as head coach before resigning after Sri Lanka’s exit from the ICC T20 World Cup Super 8 stage.
