Former President Maithripala Sirisena appeared before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on Tuesday morning to record a statement, both Newswire and Ada Derana reported.
Ada Derana said the former Head of State arrived at the commission’s premises shortly before 9.30 a.m. The reason for his appearance has not been publicly disclosed by either CIABOC or the former president’s office.
Sirisena served as Sri Lanka’s seventh executive president between 2015 and 2019. He has faced multiple legal proceedings since leaving office, including the Supreme Court fundamental rights ruling that found him liable for failing to act on intelligence warnings ahead of the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.
The former president’s appearance before CIABOC adds to a widening list of senior political figures called in for questioning under the National People’s Power administration’s accountability drive. Former Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne is currently being probed by CIABOC in a parallel matter, while CIABOC has also pursued the former Mahinda Rajapaksa-era cabinet over policy decisions.
The commission’s investigators have not indicated whether Sirisena will be required to return for further sittings or whether his statement is connected to a specific case file. CIABOC routinely declines to comment on active investigations.
