Sri Lanka have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against the West Indies in the first one-day international at Sabina Park on June 3, the International Cricket Council announced.
Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Kusal Mendis’s side was ruled to be two overs short of the target once time allowances had been taken into consideration, Newswire reported. Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined five per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.
Mendis pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so no formal hearing was required.
The sanction follows Sri Lanka’s 41-run victory in the opening ODI in Kingston, where Mendis’s side defended a competitive total to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Mendis took over the white-ball captaincy from Charith Asalanka in a leadership reshuffle announced in early May and is leading Sri Lanka on the Caribbean tour under new head coach Gary Kirsten.
