The Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) has asked the public to keep New Year festivals and parties to daytime hours as part of the ongoing national power conservation drive.
SLSEA Chairman Professor T.M.W.J. Bandara said the notice is being issued to help conserve electricity while citizens carry out essential holiday activities. The authority also advised switching off electrical appliances in offices and workplaces during the holiday period.
The appeal comes as the country grapples with depleted hydropower reserves — Castlereigh and Maussakelle reservoirs are at critically low levels — and a Middle East-driven fuel supply crisis that has forced electricity tariff subsidy measures and wider energy rationing. The government’s broader “Surakimu Lanka” schools energy conservation programme launched earlier this month is part of the same effort.
The SLSEA’s request aligns with a pattern of Avurudu-period conservation measures, including the CEB’s directive to maintain power supply on a payment basis during the festival.
