The Sri Lanka Transport Board has urged commuters to help maintain the newly renovated Central Bus Stand in Colombo, raising concerns over misuse and littering just days after the facility reopened.
The bus stand underwent extensive renovation as part of the government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative ahead of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The SLTB said the work involved significant expenditure aimed at improving convenience and the travel experience for the public.
However, incidents of littering and damage to facilities were reported almost immediately after reopening, prompting the SLTB to issue a public statement calling for responsible use.
The Transport Board asked commuters to dispose of waste using designated bins, avoid damaging seats, walls and other installations, and help maintain general cleanliness within the premises. It described the Central Bus Stand as a “national asset that should be preserved for future generations.”
The SLTB said public cooperation was essential to maintaining the facility and urged passengers to support efforts to enforce discipline at the bus stand.
The renovation is part of a broader push to upgrade public transport infrastructure ahead of the Avurudu holiday season, which typically sees a surge in intercity bus travel.
