Sri Lanka is seeking to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to promote sustainable industrial development, with Industry Minister Sunil Handunneththi attending the International Vienna Energy and Climate Forum (IVECF 2026) in Austria.
The minister’s agenda at the forum covers four areas: sustainable industrial development, improved energy efficiency, expanded market access for young entrepreneurs, and environmentally responsible manufacturing.
Post-Crisis Diversification
The initiative comes as Sri Lanka pursues energy diversification away from fossil fuels — a priority sharpened by the ongoing fuel rationing crisis triggered by the Strait of Hormuz disruptions. The government has separately pushed a 4GW solar pipeline and a 600MW pumped-storage hydro project as part of its clean energy transition.
UNIDO cooperation could help Sri Lanka integrate into global green supply chains, a potential pathway to attract foreign direct investment while meeting climate commitments. The Vienna forum also provides a platform to pitch Sri Lanka’s manufacturing base to European investors at a time when UK DCTS preferences offer a tariff advantage for Sri Lankan exports.
The government has not disclosed specific agreements or memoranda expected from the Vienna engagement.
