A train has derailed near the Chilaw Railway Station, disrupting services on the Puttalam line, Sri Lanka Railways spokesman Asanka Samarasinghe said.
Sri Lanka Railways said efforts are under way to remove the derailed train and restore normal operations. No casualties or injuries were reported in the initial statement.
The Chilaw incident extends a run of rail mishaps that has dogged the network through April and May. A passenger train derailed at Wadduwa on the Coastal Line in late April and again near Kompannavidiya the following day, a Dematagoda derailment followed in early May, and a Main Line derailment at Kelaniya-Wanawasala on 16 May was later attributed to sabotage. An express train engine derailed at Maradana on 24 May. Samarasinghe, Railway Superintendent for Train Operations, has been the recurring named voice across the cluster.
